The star of the North Sea and darling of the Germans has many names. The correct name is North Sea shrimp, but it is often referred to as porre, garnet, krevette or knat. North Sea shrimp live mainly in shallower coastal waters and the Wadden Sea of the North Sea. The catch is cooked directly on the boat in sea water so the shrimp taste fresh and delicious. Cooking gives the shrimp their pink to reddish-brown color. The taste is flavorful to slightly spicy so North Sea shrimp are often made into delicious cocktails and salads. A North German specialty is North Sea shrimp in a rye-bread sandwich with butter.
