The barramundi belongs to the perch family. Its typical characteristics are red eyes, a grey back and a silver abdomen –however these physical features can vary. Barramundis usually grow to a length of 1,8 m with an approximate weight of 14 kg, in exceptional cases they can reach a weight of up to 60 kg.
Barramundis are hermaphrodites: the first years of their life are male and at three or four years of age they reach sexual maturity. One or two years later the fish undergoes a sex change. The size of the barramundi is usually a good indicator of its sex, smaller barramundis usually remain male and the larger fish are more likely to be female.
In Australia the barramundi is considered the best that the ocean has to offer and so has been given the title „king of the fish”.
